What is a Lutheran?
Lutherans are Christians that emphasize God's grace through Jesus Christ, the importance of faith, and putting that faith into action through service and social justice.
Do I have to be a Lutheran to attend Sierra Lutheran?
Absolutely not! All people are welcome here, no matter what their background. Whether you come from other faith traditions or denominations, or are new to church, you are welcome here.
What should I wear?
Come as you are! We see everything from shorts and jeans to business casual. We care about you, not what you wear, we’re just glad you are here.
Will I have to stand up and introduce myself?
No, we don't want to make any of our guests feel uncomfortable or put on the spot. During our time of announcements near the beginning of worship, we extend a statement of greeting and welcome to all who gather together for worship on that day. It’s likely that before or after worship, someone will greet you and say hello. If you have questions, we hope you’ll ask them and come back again!
What Happens During Worship?
Pick up a bulletin from an usher on your way into the sanctuary. It serves as a road map to help you follow the worship service on the large screens in front of the church. The bulletin also contains information about upcoming events, programs and activities.
Worship lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes. During that time, we sing hymns, hear God’s Word and a sermon, pray for the church, the world, and all in need, and gather around the table for Holy Communion.
We practice open communion. All the baptized are welcome regardless of denominational background or life circumstance. White grape juice and gluten-free wafers are available in addition to regular bread and wine. Just indicate your preference to the server. If kneeling is uncomfortable, it's okay to stand at the rail. If walking is difficult, let an usher know and the pastor will bring communion to you in the pew. You can also receive a blessing instead of communion by crossing your arms over your chest as a signal to the pastor.
